Victoria’s Journey and Abuse
Victoria Climbié, originally from the Ivory Coast, was brought to London by her great-aunt Marie-Therese Kouao, who promised her a better life. Instead, Victoria was subjected to horrific abuse, including being beaten with bike chains, hammers, and burned with cigarettes. She was also frequently starved and tied up for extended periods.
Public Outcry and Systemic Changes
Victoria died on February 25, 2000, after months of suffering. Her death led to a major public inquiry and the establishment of new child protection protocols in the UK, known as the Every Child Matters initiative. The inquiry revealed significant shortcomings in the way social services, the police, and the NHS handled her case, leading to widespread reforms aimed at preventing such failures in the future.
