Dirty Duds
Laundry was a laborious task in the Wild West, leading many to wear the same clothes for days or even weeks on end. This lack of cleanliness meant that clothes were often filthy, stained with sweat, dirt, and food. The smell alone could tell you how long someone had been wearing their outfit, and changing clothes was a luxury few could afford.
Shared Clothing
In some communities, clothing was shared among family members or even neighbors. Hand-me-downs were common, and garments were patched and repatched until they were barely holding together. This practice not only spread lice and other parasites but also ensured that everyone shared the same level of squalor.
