Giant Tritons are large sea snails known for their beautifully spiraled shells. These marine mollusks can grow up to 2 feet in length. They are named after the Greek god Triton, who is often depicted blowing a conch shell, much like the shape of these creatures. Their shells are often collected for their beauty, and they play a significant role in controlling starfish populations.
Predators of the Reef
Despite their elegant appearance, Giant Tritons are formidable predators. They prey on starfish and other reef dwellers, using their sharp, harpoon-like radula to deliver a lethal sting. Their preference for starfish has made them valuable in controlling populations of the destructive crown-of-thorns starfish, which can damage coral reefs if left unchecked.
