On August 1, 1976, during the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, Lauda’s Ferrari veered off the track, hit an embankment, and burst into flames. The scene was horrific, with Lauda trapped in the burning car, inhaling toxic fumes and suffering severe burns.
Rescue Efforts and Aftermath
Quick-thinking fellow drivers, including Arturo Merzario, pulled Lauda from the wreckage, saving his life. Despite his severe injuries and being given last rites, Lauda made a miraculous recovery, returning to race just six weeks later. His resilience became legendary in the racing world.
