The Wizard of Oz’s Silver Lining
The Toxic Makeup of the Tin Man
“The Wizard of Oz” is a beloved classic, but its production was filled with challenges, including the toxic makeup used for the Tin Man. The original actor, Buddy Ebsen, had to be replaced after suffering a severe reaction to the aluminum dust in the makeup. Jack Haley took over, and the makeup was changed to a safer aluminum paste.
Costume Troubles on the Yellow Brick Road
The Cowardly Lion’s costume was made from real lion pelts and was incredibly heavy and hot. Actor Bert Lahr would sweat profusely under the intense studio lights, requiring constant breaks to cool down. Despite these discomforts, Lahr’s performance brought the beloved character to life, adding warmth and humor to the film.
