What’s the term for the intense fear of vast bodies of water, such as oceans, seas, and lakes? It may not be clear how widespread this fear is, but it’s known as thalassophobia, deriving from the Greek words for sea (“thalassa”) and fear (“phobos”).
For those who suffer from this phobia, imagine the terrifying sensation of feeling something brush against your foot while swimming in these waters. Yikes! Was that a shark? At that moment, the only thought is an urgent need to escape. That’s how we’d react. How about you?
