Absolutely Wild Cases of Feral Children Throughout History

Dina Sanichar

Have you ever thought about what might have inspired The Jungle Book? Well, think no more because Dina Sanichar may very well be the answer. Hunters found Sanichar in the jungles of India in 1867. He never seemed to have had any human interactions and he was taken to an orphanage.

Sanichar behaved like a wolf and that’s because, when he was found, he was living as a six-year-old with a pack of wolves. The hunters figured that a human child belongs with other people and they took the feral child – who walked on all fours and made animal noises – back to civilization. Even though he was able to eat from a plate at one point, he would always sniff the food beforehand. Sanichar never quite adapted to living as a human but it is said that he liked smoking and that he eventually passed away at the age of 35 from tuberculosis.
