A Wedding, and a Plan
Ponzi was without work, or a scheme, for a short time after his stint at the mining camp. It gave him the opportunity to meet Rose Gnecco, whom he married in 1918. He took on various jobs in the year following the wedding before stumbling upon what would become his most infamous scheme.
In the summer of 1919, Ponzi had taken a small office on School Street in Boston. There he would spend his days dreaming up new business ideas and writing to people who might support him. One letter he received from Spain contained an International Reply Coupon (IRC). Ponzi had not been aware of these coupons before, and he immediately saw a money-making opportunity with them.
